A team that lives and flies Chabre
Chabre Club is an FFVL-affiliated paragliding club (structure #14323) in Laragne-Montéglin, Hautes-Alpes. We were created in 2024 with one goal: to run international cross-country competitions from Camping de Montéglin as our headquarters, launching off the Chabre ridge. Since then we have organised and safety-directed several FAI Category 2 events a year, every year.
Meet the team
Chabre Club is run by a five-person FFVL bureau, backed by an events team that staffs every competition. Every one of them lives here. Most have flown this valley for longer than some pilots have been flying at all.
The bureau
Kārlis Jaunpetrovičs
President & Safety Director
"Flying Karlis." Nine-time Latvian national champion and a former test pilot. He safety-directs every task, and has written the books and filmed the guides on flying this valley.
Philippe Martineau
Vice-President
Came to the club from the business world and has flown Chabre for six years. He keeps the organisation running to the standard a sanctioned competition demands.
Cécile Daudon
Safety Coordinator
Grew up flying Chabre, with a decade organising and running paragliding school trips and events. She handles logistics and legal, and leads the retrieve team.
Ellen Tollenaar
Logistics & Live Tracking
A decade organising events for the local mairie. She runs permits, logistics and live tracking, and knows exactly how this valley works on the ground.
Nicolas Willemin
Treasurer & Basecamp
Runs Camping de Montéglin, the club's headquarters. He took the site on seven years ago and turned it into a hub for free flying, hosting three paragliding and two hang-gliding events this year alone.
The events team
Jessica Love
Meet Director
Runs the meet. A psychology researcher whose field work is in paragliding, and a competition pilot of many years. She was chosen for exactly that mix: she understands the flying and the pilots doing it.
Jacques Daudon
Meteorologist
Has read this valley's weather for half a century. He started forecasting at ten years old and never stopped, and has flown these ridges himself for close to thirty years.
The retrieve drivers
Local knowledge
Drivers who grew up in this valley or have lived here for decades. They know every road, so wherever a task takes you, someone is already on the way.
What every pilot flies with
The reason our competitions run the way they do. None of it is bought in for the week. It lives here, the same as the team does.
Weather you can trust
Tasks are set on a daily forecast from a meteorologist who has read this sky for fifty years. We call it on knowledge, not on hope.
Communication that holds
Repeaters on Chabre and a dedicated 5.7 metre antenna at HQ keep the frequency clear across the whole task area. Every transmission is captured and timestamped by the Black Box, a radio archive Karlis built himself, so any call can be replayed to the second. No other organiser runs it.
Live tracking and scoring
Flymaster live tracking and live scoring, fully integrated, with a fleet of 150 trackers supplied by Flying Karlis Events. Follow every task at chabreclub.fr/live.
Eyes on every pilot
The people following your track have flown this valley for decades. Between live tracking and local drivers on the roads below, they often know you are in trouble before you do.
Local knowledge on hand
The team lives here the year round, so they know the area first-hand: emergency services, local transport and bus operators, and where to go for whatever you need during the event.
One proven venue
The south-facing Chabre ridge, reliable thermals for long cross-country into Provence, Camping de Montéglin as basecamp, around 300 days of sunshine a year.
Briefed by the person who wrote the guide
Karlis has published books and video guides to flying this valley. During every event, each task briefing and debrief is filmed and shared with the pilots, so you can study the day before you fly the next one. Here is one task from the Belgian B Paragliding Open 2025: the briefing and the debrief.
Supporters
The club runs on local support. These partners help make every event happen.
